Hix, Wilson, & Zehring take hospital board seats

WALSENBURG — La Plaza Inn owner Karen Wilson is the newest member of the Huerfano County Hospital District’s Board of Directors following the county-wide vote Tuesday.
Wilson, Dr. Paul Coe and Bill Hix were candidates for the two open four-year terms on the board. Wilson received 109 votes, Hix 140 votes and Dr. Coe 88 votes. Coe and Hix were both incumbent candidates seeking reelection.

RE-2 considers safety concerns

LA VETA — The RE-2 School Board has identified Garland Street, which runs between the schools, as a possible safety risk for the children. The lengthy discussion considered possible but very preliminary plans to solve the problem.
The district’s Master Plan Guideline states that in order for corrective action to be taken, the board must consider availability of funding, personnel, impact on educational delivery and operational cost. “It comes down to what’s best for the kids,” stated Superintendant Bree Lessar.

Commissioners get update on HVE

WALSENBURG — Jessica Newton of Huerfano Valley Estates (HVE) gave the Huerfano County Commissioners an update on their water situation and plans. Newton said the subdivision has changed its priority from water system improvements, to water rights acquisition.
The HVE is working to acquire six acre feet of water to handle some of their water needs. Three acre feet are in the process of being finalized in the near future. The subdivision hopes to begin negotiations for an additional three acre feet of water from another source.

Charlie's Market changing hands

LA VETA — As of this week, past print time, Charlie’s Market will have sold to new owners. After 13 years of owning the business (and the business has been in the famly since 1937), Don and Mitzi Keairns have decided to pass the reins to Deborah and David Messier of Colorado Springs. When asked what they are going to do, Mitzi said, “I can tell you what we aren’t going to do -- and that is work this summer. We are going to take a bonafide family vacation.”

Two sexually violent predators to be released to Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — About 20 Walsenburg residents attended a Sexually Violent Predator Community Notification Meeting Tuesday evening at the Spanish Peaks Public Library host by city police, the district attorney’s office, state parole and probation and the judicial district’s victim’s advocate department.
Frank Gallegos, 28, who was convicted of attempted sexual assault and witness tampering, will be living at 629 W. Fourth Street. He has successfully completed parole, so his only requirement is to register with local law enforcement.

Jay Crook, former WB Mayor and Huerfano World publisher, passes away

WALSENBURG- Jay Crook, 76, former mayor of Walsenburg and former publisher of the huerfano world newspaper, died April 23, 2012 in the Colorado State Veteran's Nursing Home where he had been a patient for several years.
Jay took an active role as a community leader and had guided the Huerfano Chamber of Commerce for 13 years. First he had served on the Walsenburg City Council as head of the utilities committee before he was elected mayor in 1991 then re-elected in 1993, 1995 and 1997.

Court of appeals rules in ‘No man’s land’ case

WALSENBURG — A prolonged civil case involving a quiet title deed filing on approximately 23 acres of land in Gardner, dating back to 2001, was addressed by the Colorado Court of Appeals in an unpublished ruling March 22, 2012.
The land in dispute is approximately 22 acres of so-called “no-man’s land”, which no one claimed or owned for a better part of the 20th century.

Cuchara Mountain Resort wants to assist wounded soldiers

WALSENBURG- Bruce Cantrell, owner of Cuchara Mountain Resort, is seeking permission from Ft. Carson to implement a Wounded Warrior Project at the resort. In order to move forward, Cantrell asked the Huerfano County Commissioners for a letter of support.

Mountain Lion killed inside Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — A resident of the 300 block of W. Third St. in Walsenburg Saturday opened the sliding glass door to her back porch to call her pet cat, but the animal that bounded out from under the porch was a young mountain lion.
The wild cougar, estimated at 75 pounds, jumped onto the porch and the resident, who wished not to be identified, quickly closed the door and called the Walsenburg Police Department.

Population continues to plummet in Huerfano County

WALSENBURG- The population of Huerfano County is estimated to have dropped nearly 3% since the 2010 census was taken two years ago this month. According to the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) State Demography Office, the population has gone down from 6,711 in April of 2010 to 6,475 in July of 2011, the latest figures available.
