County hears about airport improvement

WALSENBURG — Pilots with instrument flight reading capabilities are now able to use the airport at Walsenburg. Instructions and equipment now allow for safe landings in inclement weather if the pilots are trained to do so. Most pilots do not have the certification and rely on safer weather conditions for flying.

Disaster preparedness discussed

WALSENBURG — Dr. John Davis of Walsenburg met with the Huerfano County Commissioners to discuss “all threats preparedness” for the county.
Dr. Davis is an officer of the U.S. Public Health Service. He wanted to discuss the setup of a possible “super committee” made up of local governing bodies, and groups and organizations from the private sector to meet any disaster situation that could come about.

One Billion Rising

LA VETA — One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, according to the UNITE To End Violence Against Women Campaign, initiated by UN Secretary-General's Office.
On February 14, women and men in 203 countries rose to use the healing power of dance to express solidarity with those women and to make the statement that such violence has to stop. As one woman put it, “ I am rising today to end violence against women and girls around the globe for all those who cannot rise with us.”

Medical marijuana authority approved

WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg City Council Tuesday night approved Ordinance 1020 that establishs a local licensing authority and licensing procedures, financial and location guidelines for medical marijuana facilities within the city limits, but members seemed ‘dazed and confused’ when it came to an associated ordinance concerning recreational pot operations.

La Veta’s big trees granted stay of execution

LA VETA — On February 19, La Veta's Town Board came to order, once again to revisit the "big tree" issue that has been under discussion for nearly a year. Mayor Jerry Fitzgerald initiated the discussion by issuing a brief statement about liability. In the opinion of the town's attorney, the town could not be held liable if of one of the century-old cottonwood trees on Poplar Street caused harm or damage. This is the case, in part, because the town has done due diligence by verifying that the trees are healthy.

Murder charges filed

WALSENBURG — During a brief hearing Monday, Feb. 11, the district attorney’s office filed one count of second degree murder (a class 2 felony) against Roberto Lopez stemming from a fatal stabbing at a mobile home in La Veta in early January.
Lopez is charged in connection with the death of Eraclio Lopez-Lopez on Jan. 6, 2013 at a residence the two men shared with others in the 600 block of E. Ryus Ave.
Lopez has remained in Huerfano County Jail since his arrest Jan. 7 at a Walsenburg restaurant.

City assessment report presented

Cucharas District moves ahead with 2013 plans

CUCHARA — Bob Northup, General Manager of the Cucharas Sanitation & Water District told the board of directors at its regular meeting on February 8 that he is planning to meet with the State Dam Inspector, Mark Perry. Northup said one of the topics of conversation may be the potential White River Reservoir. Northup said, “A lot of reservoirs in the county are getting to the point where they need a lot of work – Walsenburg’s, La Veta’s.” He added, “There may be some government money out there for reservoirs.”
